Frequently Asked Questions
Clinical Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy, or hypnosis, is a trance-like state in which you have heightened focus and concentration. This is typically achieved with the assistance of a clinical hypnotherapist using guided meditation techniques and verbal suggestions. Most people feel calm and relaxed while engaged in hypnosis, and are more open to suggestions.

How can hypnotherapy help me?

Hypnotherapy is often used along with other forms of psychological or medical treatment, and there are many applications. Hypnotherapy can be used to treat anxiety, stress, phobias, mental blocks, undesirable spontaneous behaviors, and unwanted habits. It can be used to help improve sleep, communication, and relationship issues. Hypnotherapy can aid in pain management and help resolve medical conditions. Note: An approved referral from a medical doctor is needed before pursuing hypnotherapy for pain management or other medical conditions.

What can I expect during my hypnotherapy session?

Hypnotherapy sessions will take place in a calm, therapeutic environment. The therapist will guide you into a relaxed, focused state and ask you to think about experiences and situations in positive ways that can help you change the way you think and behave. Unlike some dramatic portrayals of hypnosis in movies, books, or on stage, you will not be unconscious, asleep, or in any way out of control of yourself. You will hear the therapist’s suggestions, but it is up to you to decide whether or not to act on them.

How many sessions will I need?

Session frequency depends on the presenting challenge and your goals for hypnotherapy. Some challenges may require three to six sessions (or more), while some challenges are resolved in as little as one session.

How long will my session last?

Sessions generally last 60-80 minutes. This include an intake interview as well as time to process and debrief after your hypnotherapy experience.

Do I need experience with other kinds of therapy before pursuing clinical hypnotherapy?

No prior experience with other forms of therapy are necessary before pursuing hypnotherapy. Some clients notice similarities between mindfulness, meditation, and other healing practices as they engage in clinical hypnotherapy.

Can I participate in clinical hypnotherapy virtually?

Yes! All you need is a stable internet connection with video, and a comfortable place to recline. We can connect on Zoom or FaceTime.
